I’m extra concerned about 3 of my students right now. One was making strides in toilet training, but in the past few days started going backwards, i.e., having accidents. Why?
Another student has been chewing her thumb incessantly and also started hitting herself on the forehead. Why?
Another student slept four hours at school yesterday. Why? (Compounding this is the fact that his mother wants me to keep him awake when I believe that his body needs sleep.)
WHY? Why is the student behaving this way? I want to know why so I can know how to help the student. I’m sure you’ve felt baffled by a problem too. Probably recently.
I think that parents of kids with special needs are constantly having to ask why, because there are so many things that we just can’t understand. Even if a child is able to speak (unlike my students), they may not really be able to express how they feel, or what is behind their urges, emotions, and impulses. It can be so disheartening to ask why, why?—and not come up with any answers.
But God has been challenging me this week to pray and to pray some more like Jesus taught us.
Your kingdom come,
Matthew 6:10-13
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
I have not been praying for my students like I should. Instead, I have been relying on my own wisdom and understanding. I pray that the God of all comfort will comfort my students and their parents. And I pray that the God of wisdom will grant me the understanding that I need to address these problems. I pray that God will continue to use my weakness and turn it into his strength.
🤔💭 Tell me what you think.
